10Best Says

Located in Hyde Park near the University of Chicago campus, la petite folie serves traditional, classically prepared and artfully plated French food. The quaint atmosphere belies its shopping plaza locale but the free and easy parking is a plus. Duck (including the duck breast salad) consistently gets high ratings among regular diners as do the lovely pastries. The restaurant has an all-French wine list. Polished yet unpretentious service keeps French food fans coming back for Alsatian onion tart with Gruyere cheese; perfected omelettes at lunch; lavender honey-roasted breast of chicken; whole trout Grenobloise; pan-seared foie gras; Belgian chocolate torte; and raspberry teacake with French vanilla ice cream. There are always lunch and dinner options for les vegetarians.

The Zagat Review

One of the “best choices” for “fine dining” in Hyde Park, this “charming” bistro offers “always great” “classic” French dishes and wines in a “quiet” white-tablecloth dining room with “polite” servers; even if tabs are a touch high, locals agree it’s a “real gem.”

thank you to our community & friends

After a year of struggle with the scourge of our pandemic, we would like to take the opportunity to thank our very loyal customers for their continued patronage. It’s been a difficult time for everyone but your unwavering support has left us incredibly humbled. We will be forever grateful.

We would also like to thank our employees for their attentive and gracious work. They endured both a decrease in hours and an increase in responsibilities. So we would like to thank Max, Harlan, Allan, Sonya, Florence and Sasha – all exceptional members of the greater University of Chicago community. To our IT guru David and our social media maven Amy, many many thanks. To University Real Estate Operations, our thanks for your assistance. And to our French connections – Michele and Tony in Cannes, Jane, Chris and Joelle in Paris and Stephanie in the Vende ́e – merci a ̀ tous!

As we slowly begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel, la petite folie will begin the process of re-booting. With the recent changes in Covid guidelines we are now able to cater in your home or office/conference room, soon with staff if required, and will continue with our carry-out service. As dining becomes safer, we will work toward re-opening our dining rooms. We will post to our website – – all menu changes and updates as we progress.

Encore, un grand merci et nous espe ́rons a ̀ biento ̂t.
Mike and Mary Mastricola
